I believe Yamaha should be responsible for this. I've had bikes since 1964 and have never had a motor that needed the valves adjusted every 4000 miles. One cylinder (rear) on my 1100 custom is backfiring and is sluggish at highway speeds. It idles great and revs great. Holding the throttle open causes one cylinder to "pop".
