The real answer is that humans just have an innate tendency to hate things they find weird or gross. You could completely remove all of the legitimately controversial elements in the fandom regarding inappropriate behavior or zoophilia - even if it were just people who innocently enjoy dressing up, people would hate them because they're "gross."
